Remarks: Does this look like much of an international airport to you? Probably not - however it was closer to being one than you may think. Nuthampstead airfield (ex RAF Nuthampstead) was one of the airports considered in the 1960's to become the third London airport. Ultimately it was rejected in favour of Stansted airport, approx 10 miles East of here. All that's left now is a quiet farm strip (which quite obviously lies on the site of one of the old runways) where we are approaching to land, and the Barkway VOR which is visible on the extended centreline.
Remarks: Located on the site of the ex-RAF base is this tiny little farm strip airfield in Hertfordshire. I flew my C172 in for a bit of STOL fun and parked up to enjoy a few minutes of silence - the movements book in the hangar suggested I was the first visitor for 3 days!
