Remarks: The remains of Gerard Maffett's Hurricane, as it was recovered from the Essex mudflats. P/O Moffatt, part of 257 sqn, was engaged in defending Duxford from German attack during the Battle of Britain. On 31-Aug-1940 Moffatt's aircraft was damaged and descended rapidly. He successfully evacuated but sadly died from the fall. The aircraft was lost in the salt marshes near Walton-on-the-Naze until recovered decades later.
